Graphic facilitation
As graphic faciltator, Helen will work closely with the group to make sure that she is recording everything accurately. She will use the visual record to engage and involve everyone, asking quesions to elicit further information, expanding on emerging themes and ideas. She will also regularly feed back to the group what she has captured, summarising and synthesing and reflecting back the process as it evolves. In this way, graphic facilitation is a truly interactive process.
Graphic recording / visual scribing
Graphic recording (also known as visual scribing) is a less interactive version of graphic facilitation where Helen’s role is primarily to record a process or event rather than to actively facilitate the process. This can be useful for any size of gathering, including large conferences with hundreds of participants. The public record of the event can be photographed and shared and creates a lasting memory which provides a focal point for discussion during and after the day.
It is possible for both graphic facilitation and graphic recording to translate to an online platform via Teams or Zoom etc. The benefits of seeing a visual record emerge in real time apply in the same way as in a face-to-face session. The graphic helps participants to focus in a way that can be challenging in hybrid meetings. Virtual recording can be done either on paper or on an iPad, depending on what kind of output the client requires.
